Trigger Upgrade Guide

Single-stage vs two-stage, drop-in groups, best triggers by budget and use case.

Single-Stage vs Two-Stage

Single-stage triggers have one consistent pull weight from start to break with no defined stages. Best for defensive use and fast shooting where a consistent, predictable pull is more important than a light one. Geissele SSA (~$240) is the gold standard.

Two-stage triggers have a light take-up (first stage), then a defined wall before the break (second stage). Preferred by precision shooters because the wall gives a reference point before firing. Geissele SSA-E (~$240) and Timney Calvin Elite (~$250) are top picks.

💡 For a defensive or duty AR-15, single-stage is safer and more consistent under stress. For bench or precision shooting, two-stage offers better shot control.

Drop-In Trigger Groups (DITG)

Drop-in trigger groups replace the entire lower trigger assembly as a self-contained unit — no fitting or hand-stoning required. They install in minutes using existing trigger and hammer pins. Most quality DITGs include anti-rotation pins to prevent the unit from walking under recoil. CMC, Elftmann, and Triggertech all make reliable drop-in units.

⚠️ Do not install sub-3 lb triggers in a defensive or carry rifle. Light triggers increase the risk of accidental discharge under stress. 3.5–4.5 lb is the sweet spot for a safe general-purpose trigger.

Installation Notes

Installing a standard (non-drop-in) trigger requires removing the existing trigger group: drive out the hammer pin and trigger pin using a 3/32" punch, remove hammer, trigger, disconnector and springs, then reverse the process with the new parts. Takes about 15 minutes with a bench block. Always perform a full function check after installation: safety check, trigger reset check, disconnector check (hold trigger back, cycle bolt, release trigger slowly — you should hear a distinct reset click).
