Barrel
The barrel is the most impactful upgrade for accuracy. Factory barrels on budget AR-15s are often chrome-lined CMV (Chrome Moly Vanadium) with 1:9 twist — adequate for 55gr ammunition. For 62gr or heavier, a 1:8 twist is more stable. Stainless steel (416-R grade) offers better raw accuracy but requires more maintenance.

Bolt Carrier Group (BCG)
The BCG is the heart of the AR-15's operating system. A quality BCG uses Carpenter 158 steel for the bolt and 8620 steel for the carrier — these are mil-spec materials. Coating matters for reliability: phosphate (parkerized) is mil-spec standard; nickel boron and nitride (melonite/QPQ) reduce friction and simplify cleaning.

Upper & Lower Receivers
AR-15 receivers are mil-spec 7075-T6 aluminum (stronger than the commercial-grade 6061). The lower receiver is the serialized firearm — it must be transferred through an FFL dealer. Upper receivers ship directly. Forged receivers (most common) are stronger than billet; billet allows more aesthetic options.

Charging Handle
The factory mil-spec charging handle works but has a small latch that causes knuckle abrasion on scoped rifles. Extended latch charging handles solve this and improve one-handed operation. The Radian Raptor (~$65) and BCM Gunfighter (~$35) are the two dominant aftermarket options — both significantly improve ergonomics.
