Stocks & Grips Buyer Guide

Mil-spec vs commercial buffer tubes, adjustable stocks, pistol grips and cheek weld options.

Mil-Spec vs Commercial Buffer Tube

This is the most important spec to understand before buying any AR-15 stock. Mil-spec buffer tubes are 1.148" diameter with a straight profile. Commercial tubes are 1.17" diameter with a slight taper at the rear. These specs are NOT interchangeable — your stock must match your buffer tube. Most quality aftermarket stocks are mil-spec. When in doubt, mil-spec is the safer and more widely supported standard.

⚠️ Always confirm your buffer tube spec before ordering a stock. Mixing mil-spec stock on a commercial tube (or vice versa) results in a loose, unusable fit.

Pistol Grips

The factory A2 grip has a steep 15-degree angle that many shooters find uncomfortable during extended sessions. Aftermarket grips offer more ergonomic angles (around 17–22 degrees), better texturing, and reduced hand fatigue. Most quality grips are polymer and install in under 5 minutes with a single bolt.
